The Consultation
During your consultation for cosmetic eyelid surgery or brow surgery, your surgeon will ask you “what about your eyes and upper face bothers you,” and may also ask you to talk about other, related areas of your face, such as your skin tone, brow lines or droop, or cheek droop or hollowness. Your surgeon may also ask you to point out, very specifically, what your aesthetic goals are, and what looks you like and what you’d like to avoid. Identifying exactly what needs to be accomplished is the cornerstone of good results.
Your surgeon should then examine your eyelids to determine whether the problem is excess skin, excess fat, hollowness, drooping brows, or a combination of these factors. Your surgeon should also review your medical history form, and may ask for some additional information from you. It is extremely important to report to your surgeon any history of dry eyes, vision problems, prior eyelid surgery, or LASIK, RK, or other corneal surgery. Your surgeon will also pay special attention to parts of your medical history that need to be considered carefully when undertaking eyelid, such as uncontrolled high blood pressure, or any medications or supplements you may take that thin the blood. In general, all over-the-counter pain/fever reducers (except Tylenol) are off-limits for 2 weeks before and after facelift surgery, as are ginkgo biloba, St. John’s Wort, or high doses of fish oil, flax seed oil, or vitamin E.
Once your specific goals have been established, your surgeon will present you with options for improving your eyelids, and discuss with you the risks, benefits, alternatives, and costs involved.
