Why choose a Facial Plastic Surgeon?
Many different types of physicians offer cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the face. Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeons, however, dedicate their entire training and entire career to facial procedures. To achieve board certification by American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, a candidate must perform at least 6 years of supervised training after the completion of medical school, and must achieve ABMS board certification in Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery or General Plastic Surgery. He or she must then practice independently for at least 2 years, perform an adequate number of procedures to submit a broad variety of examples of competence to the Board, and then pass a specialty written and oral board exam focusing solely on facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. Only after this exhaustive process may a surgeon be Board Certified in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
